"Keep it to one page" is repeated so often it's treated as an absolute rule. It isn't — it's a decent default for a specific group of candidates, and the wrong call for others.
When one page is right
- Freshers and candidates with under 3 years of experience
- Career changers whose most relevant experience is recent or limited
- Any application where the posting explicitly requests one page
When two pages is right
- Candidates with 7+ years of directly relevant experience
- Senior, specialist, or leadership roles where depth signals credibility
- Technical or academic roles with publications, patents, or certifications to list
The real test
The question isn't "how many pages" — it's "does every line earn its place?" A tight two-page resume beats a padded one-page resume every time, and a padded two-page resume loses to a tight one-page resume just as often.
